Six young people, known as 'The Breda Six,' spent years imprisoned for the murder of a Chinese woman, grandmother Mok. But were they truly the perpetrators of the murder committed in 1993?
During a warm summer night in July 1993, a 56-year-old woman known as Grandma Mok was brutally murdered in the Peacock restaurant in Breda.
In 1994, three young men and three young women, then aged 17 to 20, were convicted. Their convictions were upheld in 2015 following a review, despite serious doubts over the female suspects’ confessions. No eyewitnesses or DNA evidence ever linked them to the crime.
The documentary De restaurantmoord reveals new facts and testimonies about errors and misconduct in the criminal investigation. Lawyer Geert-Jan Knoops, who represents four of the six, argues the new evidence cannot be ignored: "This case must be reopened. If not, the Netherlands is perpetuating a grave miscarriage of justice that has destroyed six lives."
The three convicted men maintain their innocence in the film. The three women, citing severe trauma from their treatment by police and prosecutors, contributed via their lawyer. All six have fought for over 30 years to clear their names.

Titlesequence: WOUW!
Motion design: WOUW!, Fokke Mars
For the motion design in The Restaurantmoord we made extensive use of static imagery. Unlike previous series, there are no moving pictures of suspects, but rather a multitude of photographs. From these, we created small 3D scenes in which the viewer feels almost pulled into the photos with an uncanny, suction-like effect.
For the documents, we took a different approach. We aimed to replicate the way a microfilm reader displays such material, while also illustrating how detectives dissect them to uncover hidden clues.
